There was a time when I thought living simply meant giving things up. Saying no to beauty, to comfort, to joy. Almost like it was about less for the sake of less.
But midlife and autumn have been teaching me something different. Simplicity isn’t about deprivation. It’s about choosing what feels true, grounded, and aligned with the woman I am now.
These days, simplicity feels like release. It’s stepping away from the rush. It’s creating space for stillness. It’s allowing the season itself to guide me, the way the trees loosen their grip, letting go of what they no longer need, making space for rest before the bloom of spring.
Life feels richer in this slower rhythm. Not because of what I gather, but because of how deeply I experience the little things: the glow of a candle as dusk falls, the steam rising from my cup of tea, the peace of knowing I no longer need to keep pace with anyone else’s story.
Simplicity has become an offering. A kindness to myself, to my body, and to the home I keep. It whispers that enough has always been here, waiting patiently in the ordinary flow of life. And each time I choose it, I feel more at home in myself.
So today, I’m marking this reminder with a small ritual:
I open a window and let the autumn air flow in, cool, crisp, earthy.
I make myself a warm, spiced tea, pouring it slowly, watching the steam rise as if it’s carrying the rush of the day away.
I light a candle and whisper: “I release what no longer serves me. I make space for simplicity.”
I open my notebook and write two lines:
“The one thing I am ready to release this autumn is…”
“The one thing I choose to keep close is…”
And then I sit. I sip. I breathe. I let the moment itself be enough.
Because that’s what simplicity is really about, not stripping life bare, but noticing the richness that’s already here when I stop filling the space with noise.
This is my practice. My reminder. My autumn prayer.
Reflection for you
If autumn is the season of release, what can you let go of now to create space for simplicity and presence in your life?
Closing Ritual: An Autumn Pause for Simplicity
Prepare your space: Before you begin, open a window just slightly. Let the autumn air flow in, crisp, cool, carrying that earthy scent of the season.
Make your tea: Choose a warm, grounding tea, chai, ginger, or something spiced. Pour it slowly, noticing the steam rising as if it’s carrying away the rush of the day.
Light a candle: As you light it, whisper to yourself: “I release what no longer serves me. I make space for simplicity.”
Journaling moment: Take your notebook and write one line: “The one thing I am ready to release this autumn is…”, and then, underneath it: “The one thing I choose to keep close is…”
Sip + settle: Drink your tea slowly, letting each sip anchor you into the simplicity of now. Notice how even this small ritual is enough.
Simplicity isn’t about living with less. It’s about living with what feels truest. What would your life look like if you let autumn guide you back to what matters most?
