It’s Sunday afternoon, and my thoughts feel tender, circling all the things I wish someone had whispered to me sooner. But maybe I wouldn’t have listened. Maybe I had to break the spell of perfection, productivity, and pretending in my own time.
This is the sacred unravelling of midlife. The part no one talks about because women have been trained to age quietly, to not feel too loudly, to put everyone else first and call that strength.
But here’s the truth: I’m done whispering.
For so much of life, I believed being busy meant being valuable. That my worth was measured in how well I cared for everyone else. I wasn’t “too busy”, I was trained to put myself last.
And yet, no one tells us this simple truth: you don’t need to earn your own time. You don’t need permission to begin your day with your name at the top. Choosing yourself isn’t selfish; it’s survival.
And then there’s the mirror. For years, I only saw the surface, the lines deepening, the changes that midlife brings. But I’m more than what I see. I’m the stories no one knows. The battles I fought alone. The love I gave even when I was running on empty. I’m raw, whole, and still becoming.
Sometimes, the work is simpler than we think. You don’t need a 12-step plan to feel better. Sometimes you just need one moment of presence. A deep breath. A quiet walk. Putting your phone down and letting your shoulders drop. Healing isn’t always loud. Often, it’s these tiny shifts that bring us back to ourselves.
And then there’s the unlearning. The things I was praised for, being the strong one, the quiet one, the helper, they cost me parts of myself. It kept the peace, yes. But it also kept me small and invisible.
Now, as I start choosing peace over performing, my nervous system sometimes panics: “This isn’t safe.” But that voice isn’t the truth; it’s memory. Healing feels uncomfortable because it’s unfamiliar. But that doesn’t mean we’re going backwards. It means we’re finally moving differently.
Ways to Soften Midlife:
Start your day with your name first. Journal, stretch, sip tea slowly. Do something before anyone else’s needs arrive.
Practise presence. Even a minute counts. Breathe deeply, notice your body, and unclench your jaw.
Unlearn the rules. Say no without apology. Take up space without guilt. Let “easy to love” stop meaning “invisible.”
Reparent yourself. Offer your inner little girl the kindness she didn’t always receive. Rest when you need to. Praise yourself for simply being.
Create soft landings. Protect Friday nights. Choose one ritual: a walk, a long shower, or music. Let the weekend be a space that belongs to you.
Midlife has taught me this: peace isn’t something you wait for when everything calms down. It’s something you practise, right in the middle of life’s mess and noise.
And the gift? We don’t have to do this season alone. We get to walk it softer, wiser, more real, together.
