There is a particular kind of question that seems to arrive somewhere around midlife, that doesn’t always announce itself dramatically. Sometimes it appears when you’re driving home from work, standing in the kitchen making dinner, lying awake at three in the morning, or looking at a calendar that somehow seems to contain everybody’s life except your own. It is the quiet realisation that, somewhere along the way, you became very good at being the woman everyone needed you to be, but you aren’t entirely sure whether you are still living as the woman you actually are.
That question lies at the heart of so much of what we call midlife reinvention. We talk about changing careers, leaving relationships, travelling, starting businesses, becoming healthier, finding purpose and creating a new chapter, but beneath all of those decisions is often something much more fundamental: Who am I now? Not who was I before the children, before the marriage, before the career, before the responsibilities, and not who should I become next, but who am I underneath all the versions of myself I have spent decades learning how to be?
In my opening piece for Midlife by Design, Not by Default Month, I wrote about the woman you’ve been waiting to become and the possibility that she isn’t waiting for you somewhere in the future. She may already be here, underneath the roles, expectations, and identities that have accumulated over the years.
The Woman You’ve Been Waiting to Become Is Already Here #MidlifeByDesignNotByDefaultMonth
This article is part of Midlife by Design, Not by Default Month, an annual observance held every September that celebrates women who are consciously redesigning this chapter of their lives. You can find out more here.
For this first expert conversation of the month, I wanted to explore what happens when we begin to look for her, so I asked Arlinda Norris, Stephanie Rose, and Christine J Gold to share what self-discovery actually looks like for women in midlife.
Their approaches are different, but what struck me was how often they arrived at the same place: self-discovery isn’t about constructing an entirely new woman. It is about listening more closely to the one who is already there, becoming curious about what you have learned to ignore, and having the courage to make different choices when you finally hear yourself clearly.
The woman you became may not be the woman you are
Carl Jung described the second half of life as a season of individuation, the process of becoming more fully yourself. I have always found that idea fascinating, although I think the word itself can make the process sound much more serene than it often is. Christine describes her own experience of individuation not as enlightenment but as unraveling, which feels much closer to the truth for many women.
After spending 25 years in corporate sales and marketing, Christine experienced burnout, got sober, and was diagnosed with ADHD at 52. That diagnosis prompted her to look back over her life and question which parts of what she had considered her personality were actually her, and which were adaptations that had helped her function and survive. She describes the experience of slowly separating the two, and I think there is something profoundly midlife about that process.
Because so many of us have built identities around the things that worked. Being capable worked. Being reliable worked. Being the woman who could be counted on worked. Being agreeable, productive, accommodating, and endlessly available often worked too. We received approval for those qualities, built careers around them, raised families around them, and sometimes built entire relationships around them. After enough years, the adaptation becomes so familiar that it starts to feel like personality.
Then something changes.
The children become more independent. A career reaches a point where the old ladder no longer looks particularly appealing. A relationship shifts or ends. Parents age. The body changes. A role that once gave you enormous satisfaction suddenly feels constricting. The structure that helped define you begins to loosen, and you can find yourself looking at the woman left standing there and wondering who she is without all the things that used to tell her who she was.
That can be frightening, but it can also be the beginning of something extraordinarily important. Perhaps midlife isn’t asking us to invent a new personality. Perhaps it is asking us to distinguish between the parts of ourselves that are genuinely ours and the parts we developed because they helped us belong, succeed, cope, or keep everybody else happy.
Desire doesn’t always return as a grand vision
One of the strangest experiences of midlife can be discovering that you don’t actually know what you want anymore. We are surrounded by advice telling us to find our passion, discover our purpose, and create our next chapter, but there is very little guidance for what happens when someone asks you what you want, and you genuinely don’t know.
Christine makes an important distinction here. She doesn’t think women necessarily arrive at midlife having lost their desires. Instead, she believes that after years of overriding them, the wanting itself can become dormant. That means the answer isn’t necessarily to sit down and force yourself to produce a grand vision for the next twenty years. She starts much smaller, asking women to notice what they enjoy, what makes them lose track of time, what they are avoiding, and what might be underneath that avoidance.
I think there is wisdom in that because desire rarely arrives with a PowerPoint presentation. It often returns through small moments of aliveness that we have become very good at dismissing. You notice that you love writing, even though you haven’t written anything for years. You realise you always feel better after seeing a particular friend. You find yourself reading about something late at night because you are genuinely fascinated by it. You discover that the work you thought you wanted is draining you, while another part of your job makes three hours disappear without you noticing.
These things can look insignificant when compared with the big questions of midlife, but they are often clues. The woman underneath the roles may not announce herself with a dramatic declaration. She may begin by quietly saying, I like this.
And perhaps we need to become better at listening when she does.
Sometimes midlife isn’t about finding the answer. It’s about reorienting
Stephanie Rose describes midlife as a point where the paths that once gave us direction begin to change. The children are growing, the career path may have been followed as far as it can take us, and the stories we were given about what constitutes a good life begin to lose some of their authority. The actions that got us here aren’t necessarily the actions that will take us forward.
I love that because it removes some of the pressure to know exactly what comes next.
Stephanie encourages women to notice where life feels like it is flowing and where friction is appearing, without immediately deciding that one is good and the other is bad. Sometimes what feels easy is simply familiar, while friction can be a sign that an old pattern is being disrupted or that something in us is asking to grow. Her approach is less about finding the perfect answer and more about becoming curious enough to treat life as a living experiment.
That feels particularly relevant to midlife because we have spent so much of adulthood making decisions as though they were permanent. We chose a degree, a career, a partner, a home, a school, a routine, and a way of living, and then we became very good at maintaining the choices we had made. Midlife gives us permission to recognise that a choice can have been right for one chapter without needing to remain right forever.
You can experiment without burning your life down. You can take the class and see whether you enjoy it. You can start writing without deciding whether you are going to become an author. You can explore a new kind of work without immediately resigning from the old one. You can spend more time alone and notice what comes up. You can say no to something you would normally accept and pay attention to how it feels.
Sometimes we don’t need certainty before we move. Sometimes the movement is what creates the clarity.
Confidence changes when the foundation changes
There are women who reach midlife feeling more themselves than they ever have, and there are women who feel almost invisible, uncertain, or adrift. It can be tempting to assume that the first group has somehow figured life out and the second group has not, but the expert contributions suggest something more nuanced.
Stephanie points to the difference between women who have continued investing in their interests, independence, dreams, identity, and those whose identities have become heavily attached to motherhood, marriage, career, or caring for others. Christine asks an even more challenging question: was your confidence ever actually yours, or was it borrowed from a role?
If your confidence has been built primarily around being capable, needed, productive, and reliable, it can be surprisingly fragile when those roles start changing. Christine experienced this herself when burnout stripped away the identity she had built over 25 years. What eventually emerged was a different kind of confidence, one based not on what she could produce but on knowing her own mind and learning to trust her own signals.
That distinction feels important. There is a kind of confidence that comes from knowing you can perform well, and there is another kind that comes from knowing yourself well enough to make choices that are right for you. The first may have carried you through your career and your responsibilities. The second may be what carries you through the next chapter.
You can’t rush the grief
There is a tendency in the personal growth world to turn every ending into an opportunity before we’ve had time to acknowledge that something has actually ended. A relationship becomes a lesson. An empty nest becomes freedom. A career change becomes an exciting new beginning. A body that has changed becomes an invitation to reinvent ourselves.
Sometimes those things eventually become true, but first there can simply be grief.
Arlinda is clear that women need to acknowledge the parts of life that have genuinely ended. Children grow up. Relationships change. Careers evolve. The future we imagined may not happen as planned. We are allowed to grieve those things without seeing grief as evidence that we are failing to move forward.
Christine goes further, describing grief and transformation as two things that can exist in the same season. She doesn’t believe we can skip the grief and arrive neatly at becoming. When we don’t allow ourselves to mourn the woman we were, the life we imagined, or the years we spent without understanding ourselves, that grief doesn’t necessarily disappear. It can simply go underground.
I think women deserve more permission to hold both things at once. You can be excited about what is coming and sad about what is gone. You can be grateful for the life you’ve lived and still acknowledge that parts of it were painful. You can love your children deeply and still grieve the version of motherhood that is ending. You can appreciate your career and still admit that you don’t want to spend the next decade doing the same thing.
Grief doesn’t mean you want to go backwards.
Sometimes it simply means what came before mattered.
The inner critic may have a story of her own
Then there is that voice.
The one that appears when you start considering something different and immediately tells you why it won’t work. You’re too old. You should be grateful. This isn’t practical. What will people think? You can’t start again now. Who do you think you are?
Christine doesn’t recommend trying to silence the inner critic. Instead, she suggests becoming curious about what sits underneath it. Often the voice is holding an old story about what will happen if you stop being useful, acceptable, productive, careful, or easy to love. Stephanie similarly describes those urgent inner voices as often coming from protective parts of ourselves that are trying to keep us where we are because the unknown feels unsafe.
That doesn’t mean every critical thought deserves our attention, but it does mean we can stop treating every thought as truth.
The next time that voice tells you that you’re making a terrible mistake, perhaps you don’t need to fight with it. You could ask what it is frightened might happen if you go ahead. Sometimes the answer is far more revealing than the criticism itself.
Self-trust is rebuilt through evidence
This is perhaps the thread that connects all three women’s contributions most strongly.
Self-trust isn’t something we acquire because we finally understand ourselves perfectly. It is something we build through repeated experiences of listening to ourselves and discovering that we can respond to what we hear.
Arlinda talks about listening again and then honouring what we hear. Stephanie describes paying attention to our internal signals and using them to orient our actions. Christine talks about self-trust as a series of small proofs: noticing an instinct, following it, experiencing the outcome, and gradually teaching yourself that your own signals can be trusted. It sounds simple, but consider how often we have taught ourselves the opposite.
We know we are exhausted and keep going. We know we don’t want to go somewhere and say yes anyway. We sense that something isn’t right and tell ourselves we’re being dramatic. We need help but decide we should be able to manage alone. We want something and immediately explain why it isn’t sensible, affordable, or appropriate.
Every time we override ourselves, we reinforce the idea that our own needs come second.
Every time we listen and respond, we create a different kind of evidence. We begin to show ourselves that we can hear our own voice without immediately dismissing it, and that we can make a choice without needing everyone else to validate it first.
That is how self-trust grows.
Not through one enormous leap of courage, but through the small moments when you realise you listened to yourself, and nothing terrible happened.
Boundaries are where self-discovery becomes real
We talk a lot about boundaries in midlife, but the conversation can sometimes make them sound like a communication technique. Learn to say no. Stop people-pleasing. Protect your energy.
Christine offers a more embodied way of understanding why boundaries can be so difficult. Setting a boundary may be a sentence, but holding it can be a nervous system event. If you’ve spent years believing that your worth is connected to keeping other people happy, someone else’s disappointment can trigger a surprisingly powerful internal alarm.
That is why knowing what you need isn’t always enough.
You can say no and then spend the next three hours wondering whether you were selfish. You can make a reasonable request and immediately want to soften it. You can decide that something is no longer acceptable and then find yourself explaining, justifying, and apologising until the boundary has almost disappeared.
The work, then, isn’t simply learning better words. It is learning to stay with yourself after you’ve said them.
Stephanie adds another useful perspective by connecting boundaries with capacity. Our ability to navigate people, stress, and demands changes depending on how resourced we feel, which means a boundary isn’t always a rigid line that looks identical every day. It can be an expression of what we genuinely have the capacity for in a particular moment.
Perhaps this is why boundaries can be such a powerful part of self-discovery. Every time you decide what you can and cannot give, you are learning something about yourself. You are discovering what matters, what drains you, what nourishes you, and where your limits actually are.
You don’t have to burn your life down to find yourself
There is something else I want to make clear because midlife reinvention can sometimes sound exhausting in its own right.
You don’t have to blow up your life.
You don’t have to leave everything behind.
You don’t have to become a completely different person.
You don’t even have to know what the next chapter is yet.
The women I’ve spoken to for this piece are not offering another formula for becoming your best self. In fact, Christine warns that personal growth can become another form of over-functioning when we keep consuming courses, frameworks, books, and strategies without allowing any of it to change how we actually live. The real test of growth is whether our choices are different.
Stephanie makes a similar point in a different way: the practices that genuinely help are the ones that can exist in the middle of real life, rather than requiring us to become a completely different person before they work.
And Arlinda brings it back to action. We don’t become ourselves in one dramatic declaration. We choose ourselves through the small decisions we make repeatedly.
That feels like the heart of designing a life rather than living one by default. You don’t replace one prescribed identity with another; you become more discerning about what belongs to you.
So who are you now?
Perhaps that is the question worth sitting with. Not what should you do next, and not what does your perfect next chapter look like, but who are you now that you have lived enough life to know yourself differently?
What do you genuinely enjoy? What have you been tolerating because it became normal? Which parts of your identity feel alive, and which feel like costumes you have forgotten you are wearing? Where does life feel expansive, and where does it feel constricted? What are you grieving? What are you curious about? What do you keep thinking about when nobody is asking you what you should be thinking about?
And perhaps, underneath all of those questions, there is another one worth asking: what would you choose if you trusted yourself?
Arlinda offers another question for the moment when fear starts listing all the reasons not to change: What if you don’t? We are usually very good at imagining what might happen if we take the risk, but much less inclined to consider what might happen if we stay exactly where we are.
Christine puts the choice even more starkly. Becoming yourself may cost you something, but staying in a life you’ve already outgrown has a cost too. Sometimes that cost is simply harder to see because it is paid slowly, through exhaustion, resentment, disconnection, and the gradual disappearance of the parts of yourself you stopped making room for.
That is why I don’t think self-discovery in midlife is about finding some perfect, finished version of yourself.
It is about becoming increasingly honest. Honest about what you want, what you don’t, what hurts, what has changed, what you have outgrown, and honest about what still makes you feel alive.
And then having the courage to let that honesty influence the way you live.
Because the woman you’ve been waiting to become may not be somewhere ahead of you. She may be the woman underneath everything you’ve had to be.
And perhaps midlife is simply the season when you finally have enough experience, enough self-knowledge and, frankly, enough exhaustion with the alternative to start listening to her.
Not perfectly, or all at once, but enough to make the next choice yours.
A little Midlife by Design practice
Instead of trying to work out your entire future, give yourself ten quiet minutes this week and write about the woman you are when nobody needs anything from you. Notice what you enjoy, what makes you lose track of time, what you secretly want more space for, what you have been tolerating, and which parts of your life leave you feeling more like yourself. Don’t turn the answers into a five-year plan or immediately decide what they mean. Let them sit with you for a while. Sometimes the first act of designing your midlife isn’t making a dramatic decision; it is becoming quiet enough to hear yourself clearly.

September is Midlife by Design, Not by Default Awareness Month, something I created because I believe we need a different conversation about midlife.
For so much of our lives, we become incredibly good at responding to what is needed of us. We build careers, raise families, care for others, navigate change, and keep everything moving. Then midlife arrives and, often for the first time, we start asking: Who am I now? What do I actually want? What do I want the next chapter of my life to feel like?
I don’t believe those questions mean something has gone wrong. I think they mean we’re paying attention.
Midlife by Design, Not by Default is about making conscious choices about the life you’re living now, rather than continuing on autopilot simply because that’s how you’ve always done things.
Throughout September, I’ll be exploring five areas at the heart of Midlife by Design with in-depth essays and expert interviews: Personality & Self-Discovery, Health & Wellbeing, Relationships & Connections, Money & Purpose, and Quality of Life.
And to celebrate the month, I’m offering 20% off monthly, annual, and Founding Inner Circle memberships throughout September.
If you’ve been feeling that quiet pull to do things differently, perhaps this is your invitation.
Because midlife doesn’t create the woman you’re becoming; it reveals her x
I love reading about every woman's perspective, refreshing and so beautiful to witness. Happy to contribute my story. May every woman reading find resonance for their own journey. Thank you.
