Here’s the quiet truth about midlife: at some point you look up from your everyday life and realise, I can’t go back to who I was… but I don’t fully recognise who I’m becoming either.
You’re no longer the woman you were in your 20s or 30s. Life has moved through you. Your body carries new stories. Your priorities have shifted. The dreams that once felt urgent don’t all fit anymore. Some have faded. Some have ripened. And new longings are beginning to tap gently at the door.
That’s where a Becoming Board comes in. Not a glossy “vision board” plastered with the perfect house, the perfect body, the perfect life. A Becoming Board is softer, truer, and much more grounded. It’s not about who I might be one day, it’s about the woman I’m growing into right now.
Let’s walk through it together.
What a Becoming Board Really Is in Midlife
When I talk about a Becoming Board, I’m talking about a visual home for the woman you’re becoming. Not the polished version that wins approval. Not the version that ticks every box on someone else’s checklist.
The real you. The midlife you. The woman who is tired and hopeful. Who is grieving and quietly excited. Who is softening in some places and fiercer than ever in others.
A Becoming Board is made up of:
Images that feel like a deep exhale
Words and phrases that point towards where you’re heading, not just where you’ve already been
Small symbols of what you want more of in your actual, lived, ordinary days
It’s less:
“Here’s my dream life in 10 years.”
and more:
“This is how I want to live, love, work, and feel as I step into my next chapter.”
When I created my first Becoming Board, I recall sitting at the table with a cup of tea, a slice of cake, and a pile of images, Pinterest open, and experiencing an unexpected feeling of… relief. For once, I wasn’t trying to plan a perfect future. I was simply asking: What feels true for me now? What am I quietly ready to grow into?
That’s the energy I want you to bring to yours.
Why a Becoming Board Matters So Much in Midlife
Midlife often feels like standing at a crossroads where the signposts have gone missing.
Your hormones are shifting
Your body is louder and less willing to be ignored
Work might not fit in the way it once did
Children (if you have them) are moving further into their own lives
Parents may need more from you
You’re holding a lot, often all at once.
I know there was a period where it seemed like everyone needed something from me – my time, my care, my emotional bandwidth. And somewhere in that swirl, I realised I hadn’t left any room for the question: What do I want now? Who am I becoming in the midst of all of this?
A Becoming Board gently interrupts that autopilot. It helps you:
Return to yourself in a way that feels visual, grounding and real
Remember your own direction when life feels noisy and demanding
Stay anchored to what matters, even when you wobble
Think of it as a quiet, loving reminder from your future self: Don’t leave yourself behind. We’re building something beautiful here.
How to Create Your Midlife Becoming Board (Step by Step)
You don’t need a whole retreat for this. Just a small pocket of time where you’re not rushing, fixing, or answering to anyone.
1. Start with a quiet check-in
Before you pick up scissors or open Pinterest, pause.
Maybe you’re at the kitchen table after dinner, the house buzzing a little less. Maybe it’s early morning, the world still soft and half-asleep, just you and your tea.
Ask yourself:
What am I craving more of in this season?
Where does my life feel slightly out of sync with who I am now?
If the next chapter felt 10% more supportive and honest, what would shift?
Don’t try to perfect your answers. Scribble down phrases, single words, half-formed thoughts. This is your starting soil.
2. Choose your format
Go with what feels most natural (and doable) for you:
Physical Becoming Board
A corkboard, pinboard, or a big sheet of card
Ideal if you like tactile things and want something you can physically walk past and touch
Digital Becoming Board
Canva, a collage app, or a simple Google Slides that you screenshot
Great if you’re mostly on your laptop/phone or prefer less visual clutter at home
I’ve done both, and there’s something incredibly grounding about sitting on the floor with magazines, prints, washi tape and a glue stick. But if your phone lives in your hand, digital can be just as intimate and powerful.
3. Gather your images and words
This is the playful bit.
You might use:
Old magazines
Printed photos from your camera roll
Screenshots from Pinterest or Instagram
Handwritten words on scraps of paper
Short phrases you type, print and cut out
As you choose, pay attention to your body’s response:
If something makes you feel tight, “behind”, inadequate or pressured, let it go
If something makes you feel softer, hopeful, seen or quietly energised, keep it
When I did this, I noticed something important: the images that truly lit me up weren’t of giant houses or capsule wardrobes. They were small, lived-in scenes: a sunlit kitchen table, shelves lined with books, a woman walking alone down a quiet lane, a well-loved notebook, cosy knitwear, a beautifully set breakfast tray.
Tiny vignettes from a life I actually wanted to inhabit. That’s what you’re listening for.
4. Let it unfold intuitively
Lay everything out before you commit to pinning or glueing.
You might notice:
Certain images naturally gather into loose themes
Some words insist on sitting together
A colour palette appears by itself without you forcing it
You don’t have to organise it perfectly, but you can gently let your five core life areas guide you (we’ll lean on them in a moment):
Maybe the top left becomes your well-being corner. Maybe your work and money themes gather at the bottom. Maybe the centre is reserved for one image or phrase that feels like the heart of what you’re stepping into.
Don’t aim for “Pinterest perfect”. Aim for this feels like me.
5. Give your Becoming Board a home and a simple ritual
A Becoming Board only does its magic if it actually lives with you.
If it’s physical, place it where your eyes naturally land: by your bed, near your desk, in the hallway you walk through first thing.
If it’s digital, set it as your phone or laptop background, or pin it somewhere you open daily.
Then wrap a tiny ritual around it. Nothing dramatic, just a consistent touchpoint:
A 30-second glance with your morning tea: What part of this feels most alive for me today?
A quick evening check-in: Did I take one small step that honours this version of me?
That’s all. Gentle, regular contact.

Becoming Board Ideas for Every Area of Your Life
(Using our 5 core life areas)
You can create one big Becoming Board with “zones” for each area, or separate smaller boards over time. Let me walk you through how I think about each one.
1. Health & Overall Well-being
How you feel in your body, mind and nervous system
When I first started noticing perimenopause symptoms, this section of my Becoming Board was a bit of a reality check.
For years, the images I associated with “health” were all about fixing and shrinking – intense workouts, strict routines, “before and after” energy.
But that’s not what my midlife body was asking from me.
On your Becoming Board, play with images and words that answer:
How do I actually want to feel in my body? (Steady? Strong? Pain-managed? Rested? Clear?)
What kind of movement genuinely suits me now? (Walks, strength training, yoga, swimming, dancing in the kitchen?)
What does real rest look like for me in this season?
You might include:
Soft bedding, slow mornings, stretches, naps
Images of women moving in a way that looks kind, not punishing
Realistic, nourishing meals, not perfection or performance
Words like steady, supported, calm, energised, clear
For me, swapping harsh “fitness” imagery for grounded, real-life wellness pictures was a turning point. It stopped being about getting my “old body” back and started being about caring for the body that’s carried me this far.
2. Personality, Character & Self-Discovery
Who you are becoming beneath all your roles
This section might just become your favourite.
In midlife, our roles can be so loud: mum, partner, daughter, colleague, business owner, carer. It’s easy to forget there’s a human underneath all of that.
Here, I like to ask:
Who am I when nobody is asking me for anything?
What parts of me have I pressed pause on “until things calm down”?
What words describe the woman I’m growing into now (not the woman I think I should be)?
On your board, you might add:
Images of creativity: writing, painting, gardening, photography, music
Colours and textures that feel like your inner world, not your public one
Words and phrases like curious, grounded, brave, quietly powerful, fully myself
When I did this, I realised how often I defaulted to “practical, responsible Kiran”. My Becoming Board reminded me I’m also “creative Kiran”, “playful Kiran”, “quietly rebellious Kiran”, and those parts deserve space in this chapter too.
Let your board hold those hidden versions of you.
3. Relationships & Connections
How you love, and how you are loved back
This is tender territory, because midlife relationships are rarely straightforward. Teenagers testing boundaries. Parents are growing more fragile. Marriages are deepening, drifting or ending. Friendships shift as everyone moves through their own lives.
When I thought about this area on my Becoming Board, I didn’t reach for posed family portraits. I found myself drawn to:
Two friends laughing over coffee
A couple walking side by side in comfortable silence
A woman sitting alone on a bench, peaceful rather than lonely
Ask yourself:
How do I want my relationships to feel in this season?
What does real, nourishing friendship look like for me now?
What kind of emotional atmosphere do I want in my home?
You might include:
Simple images of connection: shared meals, long walks, cups of tea
Words like seen, safe, supported, honest, spacious
Little reminders of boundaries: a closed door, a journal, a woman saying “no” kindly but firmly
This part of your Becoming Board isn’t about getting everyone else to change. It’s about you deciding how you show up, what you will and won’t carry, and how you protect your own heart in the process.
4. Career / Business & Finances
How you work, contribute and feel financially supported
For many of us in midlife, this area starts whispering loudest: Is this really how I want to spend the next decade?
Looking at my own board, I noticed I didn’t want hustle images anymore. No “girlboss” slogans. I wanted:
A calm workspace with natural light
A laptop next to a cup of tea, not a triple espresso
A woman speaking or writing with presence, not panic
Ask yourself:
If my work truly honoured my energy, strengths and values, what would it look like in practice?
How do I want to feel about money in this next chapter? (Steadier? More informed? Less anxious?)
What kind of contribution actually feels meaningful to me now?
You might add:
Pictures of the kind of environment you’d love to work in (home office, studio, coworking space, outdoors)
Words like aligned, sustainable, spacious, valued, and wisely supported
Soft symbols of financial ease; not yachts and jets, but thoughtfulness: a woman calmly checking her bank app, a savings pot, a paid invoice, a couple planning together
This part of your Becoming Board is a quiet declaration: I’m no longer willing to burn myself out for a version of success that doesn’t fit me.
5. Quality of Life (Lifestyle)
The everyday texture of your life – how it actually feels to live inside it
If you and I were sitting down together, this is the part I’d probably lean in most for.
Because this is where your actual days live. The sensory things. The rhythms. The tiny moments that make you think, Yes. This is my life, and I like being inside it.
When I tuned into this area, my eyes went straight to:
Cosy reading corners
Warm evening lighting
Simple, beautiful tablescapes
Train journeys and slow travel
Walks in nature, seasonal shifts
Ask yourself:
How do I want my mornings to feel? My evenings? My weekends?
What small things make my nervous system exhale?
If my home matched who I am now (not who I was ten years ago), what would change?
On your board, you might include:
Photos of homes that feel “quietly beautiful”, not showroom perfect
Scenes that match the pace you crave; unhurried breakfasts, slow walks, soft evenings
Words like cosy, grounded, simple, spacious, joyful, unhurried
This section of your Becoming Board is pure permission: to stop waiting for big life changes before you allow yourself small, daily beauty.
Making Your Becoming Board Work With You (Not Sit on a Shelf)
A few gentle ways to keep this alive rather than letting it gather dust:
1. Check in like you would with a friend
Not with criticism. With curiosity: How are we doing? What feels true today? What doesn’t?
2. Let it influence tiny choices
You don’t need a dramatic reinvention. Let your board whisper into your day:
“Take the walk.”
“Light the candle.”
“Say no to that extra thing.”
“Book the appointment.”
“Send the message.”
Small things, repeated often, change the feel of your life.
3. Let it evolve as you do
You’re allowed to change your mind. Add new pieces. Remove what no longer resonates. Start again next season if you need to.
Some images will become your reality. Some will stop fitting. That’s not failure, that’s proof that you’re growing.
A Becoming Board isn’t about building a flawless life. It’s about gently aligning your current life with the woman you’re becoming. Not the girl you were. Not the version everyone else expects.
You. Here. Now.
