Summer often brings more people: more gatherings, more family time, more messages, more invitations, more logistics. More expectation to be available, sociable, relaxed, generous, spontaneous, and somehow endlessly cheerful while also remembering the sun cream, the food, the plans, the washing, and everyone else’s emotional temperature.
Lovely, yes, but also a lot. Summer has a way of revealing the truth about our relational capacity.
Who gives you energy? Who helps you feel more like yourself? Who makes space for your joy, your boundaries, your becoming? And who leaves you tired, tight, overextended, or quietly resentful?
Today is about looking at relationships through the lens of expansion and depletion. Not blame, not drama, not judgment, just honesty, because in midlife, our social energy changes. Our tolerance for surface-level connections often lowers. Our desire for truth, ease, reciprocity, and emotional safety becomes stronger.
We no longer want to perform in our relationships; we want to feel at home in them. Summer may have shown you who expanded you: the friend who made you laugh until your face hurt, the person who let you be quiet, the family member who helped instead of adding to the load, the conversation that reminded you of who you are, the connection that felt easy, nourishing, and mutual.
These relationships are gold. They are not a luxury. They are part of your well-being.
Summer may also have shown you where you felt exhausted: the plans you said yes to when your body meant no, the emotional labour you carried automatically, the dynamic where you were expected to organise, soothe, host, remember, and accommodate, the relationship that still only works when you shrink a little.
This is the information we often try to ignore because we don’t want to be difficult. But the truth is not difficult; the truth is clarifying.
You do not need to make drastic decisions today; you simply need to notice what your relationships taught you this summer.
Where did I feel expanded?
Where did I feel exhausted?
Where did I abandon my own rhythm to keep everyone else comfortable?
As autumn approaches, your energy will naturally begin to turn inward again. This is a beautiful moment to decide what kind of connection you want to carry forward: more depth, more honesty, more ease, more mutual care, more space between plans, more relationships where you are not loved for how much you overgive.
You are allowed to choose differently. You are allowed to protect your social energy. You are allowed to want connections that feel like nourishment, not performance.
Journaling Prompts
Who felt nourishing, joyful, or expansive this summer?
Where did I feel seen, supported, or fully myself?
Where did I feel drained, obligated, or overstretched?
What did summer teach me about my social energy?
What kind of connection do I want more of in autumn?
Today’s Practice: One Relationship Reset
Choose one small relationship action.
You might:
Send a message to someone who expanded you
Make a plan with someone who feels nourishing
Say no to something that already feels heavy
Ask for help with something you usually carry
Step back from an obligation that drains you
Create more space between social plans
Name a boundary gently and clearly
Write this sentence in your journal: “This autumn, I want my relationships to feel more…”
Then choose one small action that supports that feeling.
