There are moments when you can feel something shifting inside you before you have the language to explain it. I’ve been having quite a few of those moments lately, usually when I’m doing something completely ordinary: making tea in the kitchen, opening the curtains in the morning and watching the light move slowly across the room, walking somewhere with my headphones in and suddenly becoming aware of the sky, the trees, the warmth on my face, the sound of my own footsteps. Nothing dramatic is happening, and yet I’ll have this strange little feeling of, “Oh. I’m here. I’m actually here.” And underneath it is this growing sense that perhaps I’m ready to stop holding myself back quite so much.
For a long time I confused being careful with being wise. I was careful about other people’s feelings, careful about what I wanted, careful about taking up too much space, careful about making the wrong decision and careful about how I might be perceived. I could always find a reason to wait, to compromise, to be sensible, to think things through one more time. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with being thoughtful or considerate; however, I’m beginning to wonder how much of my life has been spent trying not to get it wrong rather than allowing myself to experience it fully.
Perhaps that’s why the words in this image landed so deeply with me: “Fuck it and go all in on yourself!” There is something deliciously liberating about that idea, particularly at this stage of life. Not because I want to throw everything away or suddenly become reckless, but because I don’t want to spend the next decade asking myself whether I’m allowed to want more. I don’t want to keep waiting until I feel completely ready, completely confident, completely certain. I have spent enough time waiting for the perfect conditions to arrive before giving myself permission to live.
And the funny thing is, I don’t actually want a completely different life. I love so much of the life I have created. I love my home and the little rituals that make it mine. I love the smell of chai in the morning, the feeling of clean sheets and finding a beautiful piece of music that makes me want to turn it up. I love wandering around somewhere with no particular agenda, discovering a little shop, a café or a street I’ve never noticed before. I love good food, long walks, books, beautiful surroundings and those unexpected conversations that leave you thinking about someone long after you’ve said goodbye. I’m not looking for some grand escape from my life. I’m beginning to realise that I want to become much more present for the life that is already here.
Maybe that is what going all in on yourself really means. It doesn’t necessarily mean becoming someone completely new. Perhaps it means finally deciding that your own experience of being alive matters enough to be prioritised. It means choosing the restaurant because you genuinely fancy going there, taking the trip because something about it makes your heart lift, putting on the dress because you feel gorgeous in it, going for the walk because you love the way you feel afterwards, saying yes to the invitation because you’re curious about who might be there. It means letting pleasure, curiosity, beauty and possibility have a place alongside responsibility.
I also think it means being willing to be a little more visible in your own life. To stop waiting for another person to arrive before you make certain memories. To stop thinking that some experiences will be more meaningful when you have someone to share them with. There are places I want to go, things I want to see, food I want to eat, music I want to hear and conversations I want to have, and I don’t want the absence of a partner to become a reason to postpone any of it. If someone wonderful eventually walks into my life, I want them to meet me already living, rather than sitting quietly on the sidelines waiting for the story to begin.
Because perhaps this is the story. This woman is the woman. This life is the life. This ordinary Sunday, this cup of tea, this walk, this home, this body, this slightly messy and wonderfully imperfect chapter is not the waiting room for something better. It is my actual life, and I want to be here for it.
There will still be uncertainty, of course. There will be difficult days, disappointments and moments when I question myself. Going all in on yourself doesn’t magically make life easier. If anything, it requires you to become more willing to feel it all. But I think I’m finally willing to take that risk. I would rather have a life that is occasionally messy, surprising and uncomfortable than one that is perfectly controlled but leaves me wondering what I might have experienced if I had been braver.
So perhaps my version of fuck it isn’t about throwing caution to the wind. Perhaps it is simply about trusting myself enough to stop asking for permission.
To care about myself as deeply as I care about other people. To make room for my own desires. To follow the little sparks of curiosity when they appear. To say yes to more of what makes me feel alive and no to more of what quietly diminishes me. To let myself want things without immediately explaining why I shouldn’t.
Because there is still so much life ahead of me, and suddenly I don’t feel quite so interested in standing at the edge of it, wondering whether I’m ready.
I want to get my hands dirty. I want to taste it. I want to feel it. I want to live it.
And maybe, after everything, that is what going all in on myself really means.
