This morning started in the most ordinary way: pushing a trolley through the supermarket, stocking up on groceries for the week ahead. A soft rhythm to the start of Sunday, filling my basket with things that will feed not just my body, but the small rituals of my days.
By the afternoon, I found myself at the laundrette. Our washing machine has packed up, but truth be told, I don’t mind. In fact, I almost prefer it. There’s something wonderfully simple about it, knowing the whole load will be done in one go, without the usual interruptions of home. It makes life easier. Lighter.
While the clothes spun and tumbled in warm cycles, I engaged in conversations with strangers that delved far beyond the surface. The kind that reminds you how many stories live quietly inside other people. How can it slip into your day when you least expect it?
Somewhere between folding warm laundry and walking home with my shopping bags, I was reminded of something I’ve always believed: the mundane can be holy if you let it.
When I treat even the smallest tasks like rituals, I show up more fully. Washing dishes becomes a meditation. Folding laundry becomes an act of care. Grocery shopping becomes an expression of love, for myself, for my home, for the life I’m creating.
I adore homemaking. It’s one of the ways I anchor myself. But lately, I’ve been neglecting it, not because it doesn’t matter, but because I’m in a transition. My focus has been turned inward, doing the deep, sometimes messy inner work that change demands. There’s been a lot shifting beneath the surface.
In a few days, I’ll be flying to Norway. A whole month ahead, including quiet time alone at the cabin in the Norwegian Highlands. Just me, the stillness, and the sound of the wind moving through the trees. I can feel my shoulders drop just thinking about it.
Perhaps that’s the beauty of life in this season for me: it’s not about choosing between big work and small rituals, but about weaving them together. The inner work makes me more present to the outer. And the outer - these quiet, ordinary tasks - ground me through the inner storms.
So today, I’m grateful for the groceries. For the laundry. For conversations with strangers. For the reminder that life isn’t just found in the grand, sweeping moments, but in the ones that hum softly in the background.
Journaling Prompt:
What’s one “mundane” task in my life that I can turn into a ritual? How would I approach it differently if I saw it as an act of care instead of a chore?
Inspired Action:
Choose one task today: laundry, dishes, cooking, and give it your full attention. Slow it down. Add something that makes it feel beautiful, whether that’s music, a candle, or simply breathing deeper as you do it.
