I’ve always been a homebody at heart. My priority has always been my home, the physical, brick-and-mortar kind. A sanctuary I’ve curated with intention, piece by piece. The lighting. The scents. The way the cushions sit just right on the sofa. The little corners that feel like me.
When I used to travel, I’d start feeling homesick after a while. Not just for the people, but for my material comforts. My familiar surroundings. Quality alone time with myself. The way my home held me. The safety and grounding of a space I’d poured myself into.
I’d heard the phrase “I am my own home” many times before. I even believed it, in theory. But I never truly felt it until now, these two weeks in a small cabin in the Norwegian Highlands. A sabbatical, I didn’t fully realise I needed until I was here.
Here, surrounded by pine trees and stillness, I’ve brought with me the things that anchor me, the comforts that remind me of who I am. My favourite teas. My journals. My laptop. A candle whose scent feels like an exhale. My skincare rituals. Clothes that feel most like me. Curated playlists to match my mood. My Kindle, ready with stories I’ve been longing to read.
They’re simple things, but they’ve taught me something profound: I don’t need my entire house to feel at home. Home isn’t a fixed address. It isn’t just walls and a roof. It’s the space I create within and around me. And when I carry my rituals, my comforts, and my own presence, I carry my sanctuary wherever I go.
Over the last eight years, simplifying my life has shown me how little I truly need to live well. But this time away has shown me something more: that “home” is not a place I leave or return to. It’s something I embody. It travels with me. It is me.
And so, I’ve decided to document these two weeks as The Cabin Diaries. My daily love letter to this season, part reflection, part record, part invitation. Some days will be light and easy. Others will dig deeper into the shadows. All of it will be honest.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that coming home to yourself is not a one-time realisation. It’s a practice. A remembering. A choice you make, again and again, no matter where you are.
And right now, in this cabin, with my comforts close and my heart open, I feel it more deeply than ever before: I am my own home.
Journaling Prompt:
What would it look like for me to feel at home within myself, even when I’m far from the place I live? What anchors, rituals, or comforts would help me create that sense of belonging?
Inspired Action:
Choose one “home within” ritual today, something that helps you feel rooted, whether you’re travelling or staying put. Do it slowly, with presence, and notice how it changes the way you feel.
