Sometimes an idea refuses to leave you alone. A few years ago, I had an app called Live a Well-Designed Life. I put an enormous amount of work into creating it, including getting it submitted to the Google Play Store, and one of the things I loved most was actually the simplest part of it: every day, women would receive a little something from me. Sometimes it was a motivational quote, sometimes a thought or a musing, and sometimes an inspired action. Nothing particularly complicated. Just a little reminder to pause and think about something differently.
And the feedback I received was surprisingly consistent. Women would message me to say, “Thank you. I really needed this reminder.” I never forgot that, because it told me something important about what we sometimes need from the spaces we spend time in. We don’t always need more information. Sometimes we simply need a little reminder at the right moment.
Then came The Midlife Edit.
The intention was always to create a daily newsletter, and recently I found myself returning to that original idea. I realised I didn’t want it to be another place where we simply consume more information. I wanted it to create a little pause in someone’s day — something that makes you think, reminds you of something you may have forgotten, offers a different perspective, or simply gives you a small moment of encouragement to carry with you into the day.
That was what I wanted The Midlife Edit to be. But somewhere along the way, I made it too complicated. At the time, there was so much happening in my content creation world that The Midlife Edit became another thing to think about, another thing to create, and another thing to keep up with. Eventually, I stepped away from it. Except I never really stopped wanting it, and perhaps that’s because the idea was never the problem. The way I was trying to execute it was.
Since then, I’ve simplified my business and my content ecosystem considerably. I’ve become much clearer about what I want Midlife by Design to be, what I enjoy creating, what genuinely serves my community and, perhaps most importantly, what doesn’t need to be complicated. And suddenly, The Midlife Edit makes sense again.
This time, I don’t want it to be another publication. I want it to be a daily moment. One little thought to begin your day. Maybe I’ll share something I’ve been thinking about. Maybe it will be a quote from someone whose words have stopped me in my tracks. Maybe it will be a question, an inspired action, a few lines that feel a little like poetry, or something I’ve noticed in my own life that I think might resonate with yours.
There won’t be themes, five things to read, lists of things you need to do, or any pressure to consume more. Just one thought worth carrying into your day. Because I think we’re overwhelmed enough. We’re constantly being told what we should be doing, buying, fixing, achieving, changing, improving, and becoming. Sometimes what we need isn’t another expert telling us what to do. Sometimes we just need someone to remind us that we’re okay, that we don’t have to figure everything out today, that we’re not behind, that we’re allowed to change our minds, or that perhaps we should simply go outside, drink our tea while it’s hot and notice the beautiful thing in front of us.
That is the Midlife Edit I want to create.
And I think the name makes even more sense to me now than it did when I first came up with it. Because edit isn’t simply about editing content. It’s about editing your life. It’s about deciding what stays, what goes, what needs changing, what deserves more attention, what you’ve outgrown, and what you want to bring with you into the next chapter.
Perhaps that’s what I love most about the idea now. The Midlife Edit can be the little doorway into everything else I’m creating through Midlife by Design. The deeper conversations, the personal writing, the expert interviews, the resources, and The Midlife Circle can all sit beyond that doorway, but you don’t have to walk through it every day. Maybe you simply want one little reminder with your morning tea, and that’s okay too.
So, after thinking about this for years, I’m bringing The Midlife Edit back, starting tomorrow, the 9th of September. This time, I’m going to let it be exactly what I think it was always meant to be: small, thoughtful, human, a little bit beautiful and, hopefully, every now and then, something you really needed to hear.
If you’d like to start your day with The Midlife Edit, subscribe and I’ll meet you in your inbox each morning. ❤️
