When it comes to movement, it’s easy to believe we have to pick one lane and stay in it. Like running for cardio. Or yoga for flexibility. Or weights for strength. But here’s the thing: our bodies were never designed to live in boxes. They were designed to move in different ways, on different days, in different moods and seasons.
And just like a balanced diet nourishes us from the inside out, a varied movement practice can nurture every part of us - physically, emotionally, even spiritually.
I used to have a solid daily routine of Pilates and yoga. It was my anchor. Then life changed, and I slowly drifted away from it. These days, I walk most mornings, though I tend to stay in when it rains or when it’s too hot, especially as perimenopause seems to crank up everything. And with advanced arthritis in my left hip, even walking can sometimes feel more like grit than grace.
But lately, something in me has shifted. I’m being called back to the practices that once held me so well. The slower strength of Pilates. The grounding of yoga. The subtle fire of resistance bands and gentle weights. It feels less like discipline and more like devotion to my well-being, my body, and this new chapter of midlife.
Because here's the truth I’m coming back to:
You don’t need to do it all at once.
You don’t need to sweat buckets for it to count.
You just need to move in a way that meets you where you are - with kindness, intention, and variety.
Cardio gets the blood flowing and lifts your mood. Pilates builds deep strength and body awareness. Mobility work supports the ease of your joints. And together, they create something magical - a routine that’s balanced, energising, and sustainable.
It’s not about working out harder.
It’s about moving smarter.
In a way that supports your time, your energy, and your needs, not some arbitrary standard.
This is what wellness looks like in midlife:
Listening to your body.
Honouring your reality.
So this week, I’m returning to what feels like home.
Maybe you are, too?
Here’s to moving with love, not just for the body we have, but for the woman we’re becoming.
