Today I visited my Aunt and her family, and over a cup of warm Vanilla Chai Latte, I found myself deep in conversation with my cousin.
We were laughing at first, sharing stories and memories, but then the talk turned, as it often does when women get honest with one another, to how much of ourselves we give away.
She had just turned 40. A daughter. A wife. A mother of two young kids. And somewhere in all those roles, she admitted she had forgotten who she was.
And I felt it because I’ve been there too.
I told her: “When you stop trying to become everything for everyone, you will become something for yourself.”
It’s a truth I’ve had to learn the hard way.
For so long, I’ve introduced myself through my roles. I’m a daughter. A sister. A cousin. A mother. Before I am Kiran.
But here’s the thing: when we put ourselves at the bottom of the list, we don’t serve anyone well. Not our children. Not our families. Not our work. And definitely not ourselves.
We can’t pour from an empty cup. And yet, we try. We push. We give. We bend until there’s nothing left.
The women in my family, maybe in yours too, were raised on the idea that being selfless is a virtue. That our worth is measured by how much we can carry, how much we can give, how much we can endure.
But midlife has taught me something different: when I am well, when I am nourished, when I am alive in myself, everyone benefits.
The way I feel impacts the energy of the entire home. My mood, my presence, my joy, it trickles into everything.
So what does it look like to put yourself back on your own list?
It doesn’t always mean a grand reinvention. Sometimes it’s small, daily choices that rebuild your sense of self.
Practical ways to start:
Claim your mornings. Even 20 minutes before the house wakes up can be sacred. Tea, journaling, stretching, or simply silence.
Nourish your body. Eat foods that make you feel energised, not depleted. Move your body in ways that feel good, not punishing.
Set micro-boundaries. That might mean saying no to the extra thing at work, or asking for help at home without guilt.
Reconnect with joy. What did you once love that you’ve abandoned? Reading, painting, music, walking in nature? Reclaim it.
Honour your reflection. Get dressed for yourself. Wear the perfume. Put on the lipstick. Not because you have to, but because it reminds you who you are.
It’s not selfish. It’s self-fulfilling.
When you start living from overflow instead of emptiness, you become a better mother, partner, daughter, or friend. But more importantly, you finally become whole for yourself.
