This topic has been on my mind (and therefore on the mind of the main character in my novel as well!) I always have said I don't do rest well and am trying to learn. It does feel like rebellion! Thank you for this post. So resonant and timely for me.
Tammy, thank you so much for sharing this. I felt that line deeply: “I don’t do rest well and am trying to learn.” That was me for so many years, too. It’s such a strange thing, isn’t it, how something as natural as rest can feel so unnatural, even rebellious, after a lifetime of pushing and proving.
What I’ve been learning (slowly, gently) is that rest doesn’t take away from who we are; it roots us more deeply in it. And yes, it does feel like rebellion at first, but maybe rebellion is exactly what’s needed when the old patterns have been so loud for so long.
I love that you’re weaving this into your novel, too. Your character’s journey will no doubt carry pieces of your own. That’s such a beautiful way to turn this lesson into something larger than yourself.
Sending you love as you keep practising rest, even in the smallest ways. It’s not wasted. It’s the soil everything else grows from x
