There’s a version of me from 8 months ago (and before) who would have read this and thought, “That sounds nice, but I’m not built like that.”
She was quick to burn bridges when she felt misunderstood, quicker still to shut down when her heart ached. She mistook silence for rejection, space for abandonment, and she fought to keep connections alive even if it meant setting herself on fire.
But here’s the thing, we are built for change. Not the overnight, Hollywood-style transformation, but the slow, conscious shifts that stack up until one day you realise… you’re responding differently. You’re standing taller. You’re protecting your energy without having to build a fortress around your heart.
Over the last month, I’ve noticed some of those shifts in myself.
I’ve been consistent with my skincare, something that may sound small, but for me, has been years in the making.
I’ve started prioritising my appearance for myself. Not because anyone’s watching, but because I’m watching.
I’ve been taking my own comfort seriously, bringing the things that make me feel like me, no matter where I am.
And most importantly, I’ve been noticing my triggers without letting them drag me down the same old path.
I’m not perfect, I still feel that old pull to over-explain, to fix things that aren’t mine to fix, to read too much into moments of quiet. But I’ve started catching myself. And in that pause, those few seconds where the old me would have reacted, I’ve been making different choices.
Instead of rushing to fill a silence, I’ve been asking myself, “Is this about right now, or am I pulling in every old ache that feels like this?”
Instead of bending over backwards to prove my worth, I’ve been letting my needs stand without a 5-minute justification.
Instead of making someone else my anchor, I’ve been holding myself steady first, then meeting the connection from a place of wholeness.
This isn’t about becoming unshakable. I don’t want to be a stone. I want to be a tree, rooted deep, but with branches that move, bend, and dance with the wind without snapping.
And you know what? The more I practise this, the easier it is to come back to myself when I wobble. The more I see that I can stand in both my sensitivity and my strength, they’re not opposites; they’re my balance.
Journaling Prompt
Think about the last time you felt yourself “wobble” emotionally.
What was the trigger?
How did you respond?
If you paused for even 10 seconds before reacting, what might you have done differently?
What would your “rooted” self have chosen in that moment?
Inspired Action
Today, practise holding your footing. When something stirs your emotions, take one breath before you speak, text, or act. That single breath might be the difference between repeating an old pattern and stepping into the next version of yourself.
