Before You Begin
Let’s make this a moment, not a task.
Find a quiet corner that feels like yours. Play this playlist. Light a candle. Make a cup of tea, or pour a glass of wine - no judgment here. Take five deep, steady breaths. Let your shoulders drop.
The first Sunday of a new month always asks something of us, even if we don’t notice it straight away.
I’m sitting on the sofa right now, watching a video that just said something I had to pause and write down.
In an effort to prepare for the future, I stopped doing something that helps me navigate the present.
I sat with that sentence longer than I expected to.
Because that’s exactly what happened to me, more than once. The years I spent planning for a life that hadn’t arrived yet, building toward a someday that kept moving further away, while the present, the actual texture of my actual days, went quietly unattended. I was so busy preparing for the woman I was going to become that I forgot to show up for the woman I already was.
Life doesn’t wait for us to finish planning.
It just doesn’t. It moves whether we’re present for it or not. My brother taught me that more permanently than any quote ever could. He was waiting for the right time, the motivation, the later that felt safer than now. Later never came for him. Life moved on without him, the way it always does, with or without our participation.
The life I’m trying to create still requires my participation today.
That’s the part that stops me most. Not tomorrow. Not once everything is sorted, once the business is more stable, once I feel more ready. Today. This actual Sunday, sitting here, watching this video, thinking about my brother, thinking about all the women I work with who are still waiting for someday to feel like the right moment to begin.
Not just my attention tomorrow, but my attention now. My presence now. My participation now, in the only life I am actually guaranteed to have any influence over, the one happening in front of me, today, whether I’m fully here for it or not.
I think this is the whole of it, really. The entire lesson midlife keeps trying to teach me in different ways, through different losses, different seasons, different ordinary Sunday afternoons on the sofa.
Life keeps going. With or without you.
The only real choice is whether you’re actually in it when it does.
This Week, Notice:
Where you’ve been living in “someday” instead of today.
This is a gentler question than it sounds.
Where, this week, have you been postponing your own presence? Telling yourself you’ll properly rest once the project is finished. You’ll properly connect once things calm down. You’ll properly enjoy your life once it looks a certain way.
Someday is not a place you arrive at. It’s a habit of leaving today before you’ve fully lived in it.
Notice where you’ve been doing that. Not to criticise yourself, just to see it clearly.
The difference between planning and postponing.
Planning ahead is wise. Midlife has taught most of us that much.
But there’s a quieter, sneakier version of planning that isn’t really planning at all. It’s postponing dressed up as preparation. I’ll deal with that feeling later. I’ll have that conversation once things settle. I’ll start looking after myself properly once this busy patch ends.
This week, ask yourself honestly: “Where am I planning, and where am I actually just avoiding being here?”
What your participation actually looks like today.
Not the five-year version. Not the version where everything is finally sorted.
What does showing up for your actual life look like today, in this ordinary Tuesday, this unremarkable Thursday evening, this Sunday on the sofa?
It might be smaller than you expect. A phone call you keep meaning to make. A walk you keep promising yourself. A truth you keep rehearsing instead of saying out loud.
Let this week be about participation, not perfection.
One Small Shift
Choose one thing you’ve been saving for “someday” and bring it into this week instead.
Not the whole plan. Just one piece of it, today.
It might sound like:
I am calling them this week instead of waiting for the right moment. I am taking the walk today instead of when things calm down. I am having the conversation now instead of rehearsing it for another month. I am resting today, not once I’ve earned it.
Choose one. Then actually do it, because the life you’re building still needs you, present and participating, exactly now.
The Cups I Never Went Back For
A couple of days ago, I wrote to you about my Mum’s coffee. About the mug she’d make and set down and never return to, because someone else always needed her more than she needed herself. I shared that I’d made a quiet promise after she passed away that I would sit down. That I would stay. That I would let myself have the warm thing instead of postponin…
This Week by Design
Move With Me | This Week’s Practice
A proper grounding mat session to ease back into rhythm after a month of seasonal shifts. Lottie’s classical style is precise without being punishing, the kind of practice that asks for your attention rather than your exhaustion. No equipment needed. Just you, your mat, and twenty-five minutes that belong entirely to your body.
This is the practice to return to when you want to feel stronger without needing to feel sore.
Nourish | This Week’s Recipe Inspiration
This is the one: you want your kitchen to work for you, not against you. Ten meals, one hour, genuinely simple ingredients. The kind of meal prep that means Wednesday’s lunch is already sorted before Tuesday has even started, which is its own quiet form of self-care.
You don’t need to overhaul how you eat this week. You need one hour that buys you five days of ease.
Personality & Self-Discovery | The Woman Who Doesn’t Need a Clean Slate
This week, notice the urge to start over completely. The new notebook. The new system. The new version of you that finally gets it right.
Then notice this instead: you do not need a clean slate. You need permission to continue from exactly where you are, imperfect, mid-sentence, still becoming.
Ask yourself: What would it look like to begin gently, rather than dramatically?
Relationships & Connections | One Honest Check-In
This week, reach out to one person you’ve been meaning to properly check in with, not a quick message, but a real one. How are you, actually?
Let the conversation be slow. Let it be real. Connection doesn’t need a grand gesture in July. It needs presence.
Purpose & Money | One Small Reset
Look at one thing in your business, work, or finances that’s been sitting untouched since June. Choose one. Not everything. Just one small reset to carry you cleanly into the rest of the month.
Quality of Life | A Slower Sunday Evening
Choose one small ritual to close this Sunday with intention. A warm bath. An early night. A window left open. Let the week ahead arrive gently rather than being rushed towards.
Journal With Me | This Week’s Prompt
What would it feel like to begin this week from where I actually am, rather than where I think I should be?
Let the answer be honest. Let it be enough.
This Week’s Mantra
“I do not need a clean slate. I need to begin from here.”
For the women who are done waiting for someday.
If anything in this week’s edition landed somewhere honest, if you recognised yourself in the planning that’s really just postponing, I want to offer you something more than another thing to read.
The Midlife Inner Circle gives you four 30-minute calls with me a year. Real conversation, not another resource to add to the pile. A space to actually talk through what’s happening in your life right now, with someone who understands exactly what this season is asking of you.
Not someday. Now.
Before You Go
I’d love to know: what is one small thing you’re starting fresh with this week?
Hit reply and tell me. Or carry it into your journal as your quiet intention.
