It started with my sleep. Nights that used to be soft and steady turned restless. I’d toss, turn, kick the covers off, then pull them back again. My body felt like it no longer belonged to me, with hot flushes in the middle of the night, sudden waves of fatigue in the middle of the day, and bones aching in ways they never had before.
My younger self would have brushed it off, drowned it in teas and lattes, pushed through the exhaustion, and pretended nothing was wrong. But my midlife self… she knew better.
These weren’t inconveniences to ignore. They were messages.
My body wasn’t betraying me; she was speaking.
Menopause, I’ve realised, is not a thief. It’s a translator. It’s the moment our bodies start speaking in a new language, one we have to learn to listen to. Every signal, whether it’s restless sleep, aching joints, or mood swings, isn’t punishment. It’s guidance. It’s your body saying:
Care for me differently now.
For me, it took sitting quietly one night with my hands pressed against my belly to realise: I had been overriding my body for years. I’d been expecting her to perform, to carry me, to show up no matter how little I gave back. And in midlife, she finally demanded to be heard.
