Lately, I’ve noticed something shift in me. I’m no longer pushing for the sake of it.
Today, for example, I took a cab back from the launderette. I could have carried my heavy laundry on public transport like I used to, but with a hip that’s been aching, it would have been unkind. Especially after already doing a Pilates class this morning, and with a yoga class booked for this evening. The cab wasn’t a shortcut. It was the wise choice.
The same goes for ordering groceries online. Or cancelling a class when my body says no. These aren’t compromises. They’re sovereignty. They’re me choosing where my energy belongs.
For so many years, I equated effort with worth. If it was hard, it meant I was doing enough. If I was exhausted, it meant I was valid. And so, I pushed. I stretched myself thin. I wore my tiredness like a badge of honour.
But midlife has been teaching me a different truth. Exhaustion isn’t proof. Ease is. Rhythm is.
When I choose the cab, I’m saving my body for the movements that heal me, not draining it on the ones that break me down. When I let the groceries come to me, I’m preserving my strength for what truly matters. When I cancel a class, I’m listening to my body instead of fighting it.
That isn’t a compromise. That’s care. That’s wisdom.
And this is how I carry the cabin back into my everyday. I’m not rushing anymore. I’m rooting. I’m choosing softness where it matters, so that my strength can pour into the places that truly support my body, my work, my becoming.
The truth is, my body has been my greatest teacher. Through the advanced arthritis in my hips. Through the days, it refused to keep up with my proving. It has shown me, again and again, that real strength isn’t in how much I can push through. It’s in how deeply I care for myself.
And here I am, finally listening.
I’m not thinking about ease anymore. I’m embodying it. Breathing it in. Living it out.
Because ease doesn’t mean less. It means aligned. It means integrity. It means living a life that feels good in my bones, not just on paper.
Reflection for you:
Where could you choose ease today, not as laziness, but as wisdom?
Tiny ritual to try:
Replace just one push with one soften. Take the cab. Let the email wait. Breathe and whisper to yourself: Ease is enough.
