Last night, I watched the film Metro…In Dino, and this morning, I found myself reflecting on its message of women’s empowerment. The stories in the film are woven from modern relationships, the ache of routine love, the awkwardness of dating, and the messiness of real life. But what struck me most wasn’t the drama; it was the quiet choices.
Women choosing themselves.
Not in loud, cinematic declarations, but in soft, radical moments of truth. Walking away from marriages that no longer held respect. Saying no to being diminished. Reclaiming agency after years of compromise.
It reminded me of how easy it is, especially for us as midlife women, to forget ourselves. We spend decades being the good daughter, the good wife, the good mother, the dependable friend. We sacrifice. We compromise. We put our needs at the bottom of the list, telling ourselves we’ll “get to it later.”
And then one day, we look in the mirror and wonder: "Where did I go?"
The film reminded me of something I’ve learned the long, hard way: choosing yourself is not selfish. It’s survival. It’s sanity. It’s self-love.
And here’s the thing, choosing yourself doesn’t always mean ending a marriage or leaving a job. Sometimes it does, yes. But often, it’s found in the small, daily decisions that remind you of who you are beneath all the roles.
Ways to choose yourself today:
Practise autonomy. Ask yourself: "What do I want?" Not "What do they expect of me?" Then act on it, even in a small way.
Prioritise your happiness. Schedule something that brings you joy first in your day, before obligations swallow you whole.
Reclaim your agency. Notice where you’ve been handing over your power, in relationships, at work, at home, and take one small step back toward your own voice.
Say no, lovingly. Remember that every “no” to what drains you is a “yes” to what sustains you.
Live authentically. Whether it’s in what you wear, how you speak, or the boundaries you set, let your choices reflect you, not just who you think you’re supposed to be.
What the film showed so beautifully is that empowerment doesn’t always look like fireworks. Sometimes it looks like a woman quietly deciding:
Enough.
Enough of being diminished. Enough of being last. Enough of waiting for someone else to choose her.
And when she finally chooses herself? That is the most radical love story of all.
Midlife gives us this moment, this chance to pause and ask: Am I living a life that feels like mine, or am I living a life shaped by expectations and sacrifice?
Because at the end of the day, life is not a mirror of someone else’s path. It is your canvas. Your story. Your light.
And the most courageous thing you can do is to live it fully, authentically, unapologetically, as the woman you were always meant to be.
Journaling Prompt
Where in my life am I still waiting for someone else’s change to make me happy, and what choice can I make today to reclaim that power for myself?
Inspired Call-to-Action
Do one radical act of self-love today. It doesn’t have to be grand. It could be saying no, booking the therapy session, wearing what makes you feel alive, or carving out an hour just for you. Whatever it is, choose you.
