These last few days in Norway, as I packed up my things and prepared to fly home this morning, I’ve felt the familiar tug of reflection. There’s something about being away, far from the noise of everyday life, that makes the truth louder. I keep coming back to this realisation: what is truly meant for us doesn’t vanish because we took the long way round. It doesn’t abandon us because we paused or got lost for a while. It has the patience of a tide, it waits, it circles back, it knows your name.
In my own midlife, I’ve chased shiny distractions and called them ambition. I’ve clung to what hurt because letting go felt like failure. I’ve mistaken chaos for importance and overlooked peace because I thought it meant I was missing out. But the things that are really mine, the work, the relationships, the spaces, have never asked me to bleed just to keep them. They don’t make me smaller. They meet me as I am, and still fit.
That’s the gift of this season of life. You realise you no longer need to audition for your own story. You don’t have to rush to catch a train you fear has already left. What’s meant for you doesn’t expire; it grows roots at its own pace, and when you are ready, you’ll find yourself standing in its presence like you’ve always belonged there.
As I boarded the plane, I noticed how calm I felt. A younger version of me would have worried about all the things I might miss, all the opportunities that slipped through my fingers. But now I know: nothing true requires me to abandon myself to keep it. The right things, the right love, the right work, the right home, ask for honesty and presence, not performance. And when they arrive, your whole body knows. Your breath evens out. Your laughter sounds like it’s been waiting for years. That’s when you know you’ve come home to yourself.
