The Truth About My Midlife Body No One Prepared Me For

Perimenopause, Pain, and the Shift That Changed Everything

Hello, my Love. And welcome back to Midlife by Design: Curating Your Next Chapter.

Today, I want to talk about the moment your body stops whispering… and starts asking. Not loudly. Not dramatically. But clearly enough that you can’t unhear it anymore.

For me, that moment didn’t arrive all at once. It came in fragments. In disrupted sleep. In bone-deep fatigue that no amount of “positive mindset” could touch. In moods that felt unfamiliar and unmanageable. In pain that lingered longer than it used to. In a quiet grief I couldn’t quite name.

And for a long time, I did what so many of us do. I tried to manage it. I tried to optimise it. I tried to override it. I told myself I just needed to be more disciplined. Eat cleaner. Meditate more. Move harder. Think positively. Be grateful. Be resilient. Be strong.

But here’s the truth I wish someone had told me sooner:

Your body doesn’t ask for a new beginning when it’s failing you.
It asks when it’s trying to save you.

Perimenopause didn’t break me. It woke me up. It woke me up to how long I’d been living slightly disconnected from myself. How often I’d pushed through instead of pausing. How much I’d normalised discomfort because I thought that was just the price of being a capable woman.

There’s a particular kind of grief that comes with midlife. Not just grief for people or chapters that have ended, but grief for versions of yourself that quietly slip away. The cycle ends. And the grief begins. Grief for the body that bounced back quickly. For the energy you didn’t have to plan around. For the certainty that if you just tried harder, things would work themselves out.

I remember standing in my kitchen one morning, holding my tea, and realising that I was exhausted from fighting myself. Not life. Not circumstances. Myself. That was the day I stopped asking, “What’s wrong with me?” and started asking, “What is my body asking for?

And the answer wasn’t another plan. It was permission. Permission to stop chasing what used to work. Permission to admit that my needs had changed.
Permission to let go of the idea that I could out-natural, out-disciplined, or out-willed my way through this transition. I tried for years to “go natural.” Supplements. Protocols. Lifestyle tweaks. All of it. And some of it helped, to a point. But eventually, my body made something very clear to me.

This wasn’t about failure. It was about support. Choosing HRT wasn’t a dramatic decision. It was a grounded one. It came from listening, not panic. From information, not fear. From self-trust, not defeat. And I want to say this gently, because I know how charged this conversation can be: Choosing HRT didn’t mean I gave up on myself. It meant I stopped abandoning myself.

It was one piece of a much bigger picture. Because what actually changed my life wasn’t one decision. It was a series of honest ones. I stopped fighting my body. I stopped treating pain as something to power through or silence with grit. I started seeing it as communication.

There were days when my hips ached so deeply it felt like my body was carrying decades of stored tension and unprocessed emotion. Pain like that doesn’t respond well to being ignored. That’s when I started integrating support that didn’t require me to push harder.

One of the things that genuinely helped me manage pain, especially on days when my nervous system felt fried, was using the Pulsio TENS Pod. And I want to be clear about why I’m sharing this with you. Not because it’s a miracle cure. Not because pain should be eliminated at all costs. But because relief matters.

The Pulsio TENS Pod works by sending gentle electrical pulses to help ease muscle tension and pain. I use it on my hips and lower back on days when everything feels inflamed or tight, especially when I want relief without reaching straight for medication. It’s small, portable, and discreet. And more importantly, it allows me to respond to my body with care rather than frustration. It’s become part of my support system, not a fix.

And that’s the shift, isn’t it? Midlife isn’t about fixing yourself. It’s about building a life that can hold you. I had to relearn what worked for my body. Not what worked ten years ago. Not what worked for someone else on Instagram. What worked for me. That meant eating in a way that stabilised my blood sugar instead of punishing it. Moving consistently, not intensely. Strength training instead of endless cardio. Walking. Resting. Hydrating properly. Sleeping earlier. Saying no more often.

It meant designing habits I could actually live with. And it meant accepting that my body was no longer interested in extremes. She wanted consistency. She wanted honesty. She wanted rhythm.

There’s a moment in midlife where you realise that resilience doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from responding differently. And sometimes, alongside all the practical changes, there’s an emotional reckoning too. When the cycle ends, something tender opens up. A space where you have to grieve what’s gone without trying to rush into reinvention.

I let myself feel that grief. The sadness. The anger. The confusion. I stopped trying to spiritualise it away. Because grief is not a problem to solve. It’s a process to move through. And on the other side of that grief, something quieter emerged. A steadier sense of self. A deeper trust. A relationship with my body that feels more like a partnership than a battleground.

So if your body has been asking for a new beginning, please know this: you don’t have to answer all at once. You don’t need a grand overhaul. You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to prove your strength by suffering silently.

Midlife is not the end of ease. It’s the beginning of discernment. And the more honestly you respond to what your body is asking for, the more you’ll realise she’s not trying to limit you. She’s trying to lead you home.

Until next time, my Love, be gentle with yourself. Your body has been carrying you for a very long time. It deserves your partnership now.

With love,

Kiran x
