This is so beautifully written, Kiran. Thank yo so much for sharing. I feel much the same way when I'm around family. It takes me back to one of the worst times in my life. Which is one reason why I try to separate myself. I haven't quite reached the part where I stay with myself when I'm around them. I'm hoping that's something that comes with more wisdom and experience.

Priya, I really understand this. And I think sometimes creating distance is exactly what we need before we have the capacity to stay connected to ourselves in the presence of people who bring us back to an older version of who we were.

I don’t think wisdom necessarily means becoming unaffected by family, either. Perhaps it’s more about slowly recognising when that younger version of us has arrived in the room and being able to say, gently, I see you, but I’m not her anymore. I’m still the daughter, the niece, the younger one, but I don’t have to become smaller because I’m in that role.

And I hope that comes for you too, in whatever way feels safe and right for you. There is no rush. Sometimes separation is part of finding your way back to yourself x
