I was born and brought up in Norway, so the Nordic way of life has never felt like a lifestyle trend to me. It was simply life.

It was the quiet of the mornings, the clean, uncluttered homes, and the shoes left by the front door. It was long walks wrapped in layers because the weather was never considered a good enough reason to stay inside. It was coffee shared around a table without anyone checking the time, and weekends that were allowed to feel like weekends.

It was a way of living that valued simplicity without making life feel sparse, and slowness without mistaking it for laziness. I didn’t have a name for it when I was growing up. I didn’t know that one day people across the world would be buying books about hygge, researching Scandinavian interiors, or trying to introduce a little more Nordic balance into their lives. I only knew that I loved the feeling of it, and I still do.

A Life That Doesn’t Need to Be Filled to Be Full

There is something deeply reassuring about the Nordic belief that more is not always better. The Swedish word lagom is often translated as not too much, not too little, but just enough. It is a philosophy of balance that can be seen throughout Nordic culture, from the way homes are designed to the way people think about work, rest, and consumption.

It reminds us that a beautiful life need not be excessive. You don’t need a home overflowing with things to make it feel welcoming. You don’t need a diary packed with plans to prove that your life is meaningful. You don’t need to keep adding, achieving, and acquiring in order to feel as though you are moving forward.

Sometimes, the most meaningful thing you can do is notice what is already enough: the meal on the table, the warmth of the room, the light coming through the window, the conversation that doesn’t need to lead anywhere, and the afternoon with nothing urgent waiting at the end of it.

This is something I return to more and more in midlife. After years of being told to strive, stretch, and become more, there is freedom in asking a different question: what would feel like enough for me now?

Slowness Is Not the Absence of Ambition

We have been taught to associate a full life with a fast one. We rush through the morning, work through lunch, fill our weekends, and then wonder why we feel disconnected from ourselves. Nordic living offers another perspective. You can be ambitious and still protect your peace. You can work hard and still go home. You can care about your goals without sacrificing your health, your relationships, or your ability to enjoy the life you are building.
